Reasons to (why I) love Grace and Frankie

Source: Netflix.com

I stumbled upon the series Grace and Frankie on Netflix last year and I must say it was a great find. Starring Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin, whom I had no idea about, who are brought together when their husbands drop a bomb that they have been having an affair, together, for decades! If that doesn’t scream “watch me!” then I don’t know…

The two never having being friends but been in each other’s lives for decades have had a forced friendship that, in their case, comes with their husbands being friends and law partners. They have no actual affection for each other.

Now this is why I like the series:

They manage to strike a friendship: When their husbands drop the shocking and what I think to be devastating news, the two are forced to move in together and somehow eventually manage to strike a beautiful friendship. Grace who is uptight, whilst Frankie is a hippie; the two give me vibes and a peep into the future of what my BFF and I will be like when we are old and grey and our hips are failing us.

They manage to synergize their different characters: whilst this may be credit to other parties involved in the production of the series, but mostly them as characters; they manage to take the rigid archetypes of high-maintenance corporate lady (a SLAY QUEEN) and somewhat low-maintenance hippie and inject them honesty to build what will over the 7 seasons grow into more than just two wives who had to move in together because their husbands got married to each other.

Hippie Frankie: Frankie is my favourite! She is a free spirit and definitely my spirit animal. She is also a cool mom and an old woman who smokes weed! I wouldn’t mind to be her, without the weed of course (who am I kidding!) She is an artist, who paints and a vegetarian…now the vegetarian part could never be me. I want to live life my way, plan my day my way and do things that matter to me and not crack over someone else’s products and that’s just who and what Frankie is. Important to mention that her art is weird but that is what makes Frankie Frankie!

Its comedy: It is comedy for crying out loud! Sometimes all you need is 4 old people trying to navigate their new lives, 2 men as a newly wedded gay couple that just came out and 2 women who are left by their husbands. There are so many LOL moments in it.

Good story build-up: After the first season, heck, even the first episode I couldn’t see how the show would progress to 6 more seasons. But they pulled that off. You know with most series, only the first season is the best, the rest just becomes nonsense, I could name a few but we not here for that. The show, many seasons later has managed to still reel me in. In as much as it focuses on the two women, there are other characters as well like their children (who also have to deal about becoming a blended family); my favourite being Brianna who will laugh as a house burns down.

There isn’t any character I hate: You can hate a character because they are doing a good job at it and hating them is actually the right reaction and response to them. But I am talking about hating a character because you can tell they are not doing justice and there is room for improvement. There is no character that I hate or dislike, which is great news.

Now the real question is SHOULD YOU WATCH THIS SHOW? If watching two old women do drugs, talk about sex and design vibrators and seek to make it a successful business does it for you as it does it for me, you definitely should.
